Summary
The purpose of this funding opportunity is to fund early-career and/or mid-career researchers using a Chair model to advance Implementation Science within the field of human development, child, and youth health with the ultimate goal of promoting health and health equity. The Chair model supports a multi-pronged approach to Implementation Science capacity development as it supports the applicant, their program of research, and the team they build.
The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to:
- Build capacity in the current and next generation of Implementation Science researchers in human development, child, and youth health to facilitate the integration of evidence into health-related practice and policy.
- Advance the field of Implementation Science in human development, child and youth health through building the evidence base of what works best, for who, where, and with what impact in implementation efforts.
- Strengthen research excellence and ensure maximum research impact through:
- Co-production of research with knowledge users to ensure that evidence-based practices and/or policies and implementation strategies address barriers and facilitators (e.g., societal, structural) to implementation, respond to needs, and promote health equity.
- Consideration of diverse biological and/or socio-cultural identity factors in research design, including diverse research methods such as those based in Indigenous ways of knowing.
The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $4,000,000, enough to fund approximately four (4) awards. This amount may increase if additional funding partners participate. The maximum amount per award is $200,000 per year for up to 5 years, for a total of $1,000,000 per award.
Of this $ 4,000,000:

- $ 1,000,000 is available to fund one (1) application relevant to the Indigenous Health Implementation Science Chair in Human Development, Child and Youth Health priority research area.
- Each Chair award will include:
- Salary award: $100,000 per year as a salary contribution, including fringe benefits and teaching release time.
- If the Chair's salary exceeds this amount, all additional costs are to be borne by the host institution.
- Research allowance: $100,000 per year as a grant component to support research, knowledge mobilization, training and mentorship/capacity-building activities.
- Salary award: $100,000 per year as a salary contribution, including fringe benefits and teaching release time.

Approvals
Prior to submission, please connect with your Faculty as this is a Salary award - not a research grant, and their eligibility requirements for supporting your application may differ from those of a standard research grant. Consult your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) (ADR) regarding Faculty-specific deadlines and submission processes.
Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.
Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.
Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:
- Principal Investigator
- Department Head
- Faculty ADR/Dean
- Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)
Read the Meaning of Grant Signatures policy to understand what your approval means. Please see the agency guidelines for details about which signatures are required on your application, as it may differ from internal requirements.
Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances. If you submit your RMS record to Research Services after the internal deadline has passed, you must secure additional approvals. Please read: Late Applications Process.
Additional Information
Full copies of the ResearchNet applications, plus approval in the Research Management System (RMS) (https://research.ucalgary.ca/conduct-research/additional-resources/research-management-system-rms), will be required by RSO by noon on October 10, 2024. Please be sure to select "Submitted for approvals" (Under Save & Progress) in RMS in good time to allow for approvals from your Department Head and/or ADR prior to the Research Services deadline. Consult your department and faculty for more information on their approval processes and timelines.
Once your RMS record has been approved by Research Services, submit to the agency by their deadline on October 15, 2024.
